Frequently Asked Questions
What was your motivation to get into Amateur Radio?
Growing up with a father who did avionics I was always interested in electronics. I have also been into math and science. I find things I do that the science of how it works is applicable to doing it fascinating. This coupled with seeing my neighbors towers, just became a natural fit.
What is your favorite part of the hobby?
What my favorite part is, is the face that there is something for everyone. Want to work on operating in emergency situations with limited resources? POTA. Want to talk to people and learn about them? SSB Had a long week of talking to others but want to play radio? Digital modes. Want to bounce signals off the moon to other parts of the planet? EME. There is literally something for everyone.
Are the tests difficult?
I did not personally find them to be too difficult, thought I have a benefit many don’t with know electronics, working with electricity and automation regularly in my job. Two great Elmers in the hobby etc.
How do I get my license?
The best way to get your license is to begin studying. Regardless of which method you use, make sure you review all questions in a study mode vs. just taking sample practice tests. The reason for this is there are many questions in the various test pools and you need to see them all as you never know what will be on your test. I also serve the hobby as a Volunteer Examiner (VE). Once you have studied and are ready to take a test, reach out to me and I can help you get tested!
